The Modes of Realization
Upayas
The Tantrasara organizes all spiritual methods into four 'modes of realization' or 'means' (upayas). The first, taught in Day Two, is the Spontaneous mode (anupaya) -- realization without any method, arising from an intense Descent of Power. The second is the Divine mode (shambhava-upaya), taught in Day Three, where one enters the state of Shiva directly through the power of will, by recognizing all of reality as a reflection in the space of Awareness. The third is the Empowered mode (shakta-upaya), taught in Day Four, the path of contemplation and discernment, where insight is gradually refined through sound reasoning, authentic tradition, and a qualified teacher. The fourth is the Embodied mode (anava-upaya), the path of yoga and bodily practices, which works at the level of breath, body, and the individual self. Abhinavagupta emphasizes that these are not ranked hierarchically in an absolute sense; each is an expression of Shiva's independent freedom, and each is appropriate for a different kind of seeker. The three method-based modes correspond to the powers of Will, Knowledge, and Action respectively.
