The Phonemic Matrix
Matrika / Malini
Day Three of the Tantrasara presents a remarkable teaching: the Sanskrit alphabet is not merely a human invention for communication, but is a map of how Consciousness creates the universe through sound-vibration. The three fundamental Powers of the Highest Divinity -- the Absolute (anuttara), Intention (iccha), and Unfolding Insight (unmesha) -- are embodied in the three primary vowels a, i, and u. From the interplay of these three, all other vowels arise, and from the vowels ('seeds') come the consonants ('wombs'). Each class of consonants corresponds to a specific Power: the velars (k, kh, etc.) arise from the Absolute, the palatals (c, ch, etc.) from Intention, and the labials (p, ph, etc.) from Unfolding Insight. There are five consonants in each class, corresponding to the five Powers. The entire alphabet thus maps the complete process of creation, from the undifferentiated Absolute through the stages of differentiation to the fully manifest world. The Malini ordering of this alphabet (a non-standard sequence) is especially significant in the Trika tradition and is central to its ritual and contemplative practices.
